Acne scaring is also known as acne vulgaris and it is a common skin condition which generally affects the teenage population. It is considered to be a common skin disease, which is characterized by numerous non-inflammatory comedones as well as inflammatory papules.  One of the main reasons why acne scarring affects the face, the back, and the upper part of the chest is because acne scarring affects those areas of the skin wherein the presence of sebaceous follicles are high. While severe acne is inflammatory, it may manifest into non-inflammatory forms and lead to severe scarring. It is interesting to note that when the androgen stimulation in the sebaceous glands is very high, the chances of acne scars are doubled.

Different Types of Acne That Can Cause Acne Scarring

For curing acne scarring effectively, you need to first understand the different forms of acne. Let us begin with amassing some information on the most common forms of acne:

  • Mild Acne: if you suffer from blackheads or whiteheads, you can be a little bit relieved because these are the mildest forms of acne and can therefore be cured really easily. Mild acne is simply a case of oil-plugged skin pores and a proper removal-procedure could insure zero scars on the facial skin.
  • Moderate Acne: moderate acne is defined as red, inflamed lesions on the surface of the human skin. They are called pimples and are a clear indicator of severe bacterial infections. These could either be papules or pustules (the ones with white centers).
  • Severe Acne: pus-filled cysts could be the most severe and painful forms of acne. These carry the maximum risk of acne scarring.

Acne Scarring Treatment

There are numerous kinds of acne infections and in order to treat acne scars, you may have to use diverse treatment methodologies. The thumb rule is to never scratch or peel off an acne lesion or else, the scare will turn permanent. Over exposure to sun or dirt and grime polluted environs are also not advisable. Medical help from an experienced dermatologist could be necessary, if your acne is severe. Nonetheless, here is a brief gist of what needs to be done: For mild scarring, topical skin care products and medications could work sufficiently. These are usually tretinoin creams which contain alpha hydroxy and beta-hydroxy healing agents. For severe acne scarring though, a combination of surgical procedures and skin resurfacing treatments are highly recommended. Some of these include dermal fillers, punch excision, punch elevation, subcutaneous incision and laser resurfacing. It is advisable that before you actually get started with treating acne scarring, you need to make sure that the new acne eruptions are kept well under control.

Best Practices To Control Acne Scarring

Acne and consecutive scarring can be controlled and cured to a great extent by following these simple yet effective tips:

  • Maintain strict cleanliness and hygiene to prevent bacteria from breeding and causing pimples. This will reduce acne scarring.
  • Avoid harsh, chemical rich skin products; especially scrubs.
  • Use scar lightening home remedies like packs made of gram flour, turmeric, dried orange peel powder, fuller’s earth, neem leaves, oatmeal, honey, and similar natural agents.

Bottom Line

Acne scarring is a serious issue and you should never ignore it mainly because they are permanent. Once you experience acne breakout or some other form of acne, you should always go to see your dermatologist.
